Arriving in Auckland

Auckland airport

Auckland international airport is located on the west coast of the city (the east and west coast of New Zealand are less that 2km apart in Auckland). After landing you will be required to pass through immigration and customs. Most ePassport holders will be able to use self-service terminals and e-gates. Customs in New Zealand are much stricter than many guests will have been used to. Please make sure you understand what you can and can’t bring into New Zealand. If you have any doubts, declare it.

There are a number of options for traveling to the city from the airport. Taxis and ride-shares are readily available. You can also take a shuttle or public transport.

Public Transport in Auckland

You may use your contactless debit or credit card, smartphone or smart device to tag on and tag off all public transport across Auckland. You do not need to purchase a separate AT Hop card (the local travel card used to travel on the train bus and ferries across Auckland). Consider getting the Auckland Transport app (‘AT Mobile app’) to plan your journey in advance. More details about public transport can be found here.

Registration and getting your nametag

There will be a registration desk open for you to pick up your name-tags from 4-6pm on Sunday in the Level 1 Foyer of the Owen G. Glenn building (the same place as the welcome reception from 5-6pm). The registration desk will also be open 8-9am on Monday and during the tea breaks. Please keep a hold of your name tag as it also functions as your ticket to social functions (such as the dinner).

WiFi at the conference venue

There are a couple of options for connecting to WiFi while attending the conference.

If your institute is on Eduroam: You will be able to connect to the Eduroam network on campus using your usual university credentials.

UoA-Guest-Wifi: If you do not have Eduroam credentials (or are having difficulties connecting to the Eduroam network) you can use the UoA-Guest-WiFi network with the following credentials

Wifi Name: UoA-Guest-WiFi

Username: jointmeeting@uoawifi.com

Password: VVP9fGM0 (final digit is zero)

Note that these credentials will only be valid during the conference (but including Sunday 08 December)

Weather in Auckland

We are at the start of the Southern Hemisphere summer. Day-time temperatures in Auckland tend to range from 14C-22C (57F-72F). It can be quite humid. Due to the narrow landmass, weather forecasting in New Zealand is notoriously difficult and usually only valid for 1-3 days in advance. You can check the weather forecasts here,

https://www.metservice.com/towns-cities/regions/auckland/locations/auckland/7-days

The three day rainfall map is quite useful if you are planning outdoor activities.

Rain in Auckland is often intense but very short lived, the radar map can be very useful in avoiding rain-fronts.
